A24 wasn’t the only horror production house to drop a spicy new trailer on us today. Blumhouse also joined in on the fun, releasing the second trailer (and first true trailer) for its upcoming survival thriller The Hunt.
I say it’s the first true trailer because earlier this month, Blumhouse released a teaser trailer titled the “Human Hunting Experience,” which plays like an ad from within the movie’s universe. It was interesting and teased the film’s very simple and perhaps overused premise, but it still doesn’t really count.
Speaking of that premise, I could describe to you what The Hunt looks to be about using lots of original words and phrases, or I could say that it looks like a bit of a rip of The Hunger Games (2012), which is a rip of Battle Royale (2000), which is a rip of Richard Connell’s short story The Most Dangerous Game, which was published back in 1924. All of those descriptions would probably be accurate enough.
However, don’t mistake me as automatically dismissive here; I actually think The Hunt looks promising, and I’m looking forward to seeing it. First of all, it has a shit ton of people in it—not massive names, but big enough to assume that they had other options. It’s also directed by Craig Zobel (¯\_(ツ)_/¯) and co-written by Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Lost, Prometheus) and Nick Cuse (Maniac, The Leftovers), which also feels a bit promising.
And, secondly, I’m of the belief that a reused premise doesn’t automatically mean a dogshit movie. There’s a world in which everything happens as you’d more or less expect it to, and because it’s well-done, you still enjoy the hell out of it. Fingers crossed that’s what we’ll get here. The Hunt is set to hit theaters September 27.
