Though I’m not crazy about the idea of every popular franchise being explored in a “cinematic universe,” James Wan’s The Conjuring Universe has yet to let me down. Yes, I even enjoyed 2014’s widely despised Annabelle. The Nun, the fifth installment in the wildly successful franchise, will take us back to 1952 in order to get a closer look at the history of Valak, the demon nun vanquished by Ed and Lorraine Warren at the end of 2016’s The Conjuring 2.
Written by Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, It) and directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow), The Nun stars Demián Bichir and Taissa Farmiga, the real life sister of Lorraine Warren herself, Vera Farmiga. The trailer doesn’t give much away, but is packed with atmosphere and a few unsettling images of Valak, brought to life once again by Bonnie Aarons. Check out the trailer and synopsis below and let us know what you think!
When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
The Nun will be released in theaters on September 7, 2018.
