If you had asked me five years ago which moderately well-received horror film would spawn an entire franchise, there’s absolutely no way I would have answered, “The Purge, of course.” And yet here I am, in 2018, watching a trailer for its upcoming fourth installment, The First Purge. And you know what? It looks pretty damn good. I mean it looks essentially exactly like the three Purge films that came before it, but at this point that doesn’t seem like it’s a bad thing.
Exploring the origins of the titular 12-hour killing spree, The First Purge is directed by Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands) from a script written by series creator James DeMonaco. After a handful of familiar shots, the trailer introduces us to a small community who decide to stand up against the newly implemented purge and the government agents hell-bent on sparking violence. Check out the trailer and synopsis below and let us know what you think in the comments!
To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
The First Purge will be released in theaters on July 4, 2018.
