The explosion of the horror genre on film in mostly thanks to one studio. From the ’30s through the ’50s, Universal Studios cranked out movie after movie featuring our favorite monsters, and audiences couldn’t wait to see more of Dracula, Frankenstein, or the Mummy. Even when Universal seemed to run out of creative steam with a few questionable releases, the characters themselves were well taken care of.
British film studio Hammer Film Production took over the monster maker role in the ’50s, and continued to create unique stories for some of the most beloved monsters. Although the characters were not always the same, Hammer had a clear vision and released some truly memorable monster films.
