One of horror’s most popular and enduring subgenres is the slasher, with origins that can be traced, arguably, back to 1960 and Alfred Hitchcock’s game-changing classic Psycho. But two decades later is when the subgenre really exploded, with the release of now-ubiquitous classics like Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, just to name a few.
The trend continued into the 1990s, though not all of them have been able to withstand the test of time. Even fewer have been granted the franchise treatment. While movies like My Bloody Valentine were capped at a single release, the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has bred eight sequels, a television series, novels, and even comic books over 25 years. Another enduring slasher franchise, Halloween, turned 40 years old this year and saw the release of its eleventh installment earlier this month.
Regardless of franchise treatment, these films have all changed the face of the genre in their own memorable ways, burning images of their respective unstoppable killers into our minds for decades. But before we were ever introduced to these now-iconic killers, before even buying our tickets and taking our seats in the theater, there were the movie posters—and, more importantly, their taglines—that drew us in.
The tagline is one of the most fun parts of a film’s promotion, and is one of the easiest ways to set the tone for what’s to come. Who can forget classics like “They’re here,” from 1982’s Poltergeist, or “In space, no one can hear you scream,” from 1979’s Alien. But how well do you remember your slashers? Take your chances with the quiz below to find out.
