Universal Announces “Dark Universe” Branding For Upcoming Series of Films

Earlier today, Universal Studios released a wave of new information surrounding their upcoming cinematic universe starting with its official branding – Dark Universe. Complementing the new name is a motion logo complete with a musical theme composed by Danny Elfman.

While the reveal of the official name is exciting enough, Universal also announced that Beauty and the Beast director, Bill Condon will lead the Dark Universe’s second film, The Bride of Frankenstein. While the director of a live action Disney flick may seem like a strange choice for Bride, Condon is responsible for Gods and Monsters, a 1998 film that explores the final days of Frankenstein director James Whale.

While the actress set to fill Elsa Lanchester’s shoes has yet to be announced, the film has an official release date of Thursday, February 14, 2019.

Universal also took this opportunity to release a photo of some of the Dark Universe’s upcoming stars gathered together for the first time. In addition to the cast of The Mummy, this new photo features Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem who will play The Invisible Man and Frankenstein’s Monster respectively.

Russell Crowe (Dr. Henry Jekyll), Javier Bardem (Frankenstein's Monster), Tom Cruise (Nick Morton), Johnny Depp (The Invisible Man), Sofia Boutella (The Mummy)

And last but not least, we were treated to a little more information regarding Prodigium – the mysterious organization led by Dr. Jekyll that we can only assume will act as the connecting thread between all of the films in the Dark Universe. Check out Universal’s description of Prodigium as well as an incredible promo video utilizing all of the Classic Monsters, below.

Led by the enigmatic and brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll, Prodigium’s mission is to track, study and – when necessary – destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world. Working outside the aegis of any government, and with practices concealed by millennia of secrecy, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilized society… and will go to any length to contain in.
