Leatherface Gets Its First Official Trailer

Regarded as one of the most influential horror films of all time, Tobe Hooper’s 1974 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has spawned a full-blown franchise with comics, video games, and eight films. Today, we got our first look at the newest film in the series, Leatherface. Directed by French filmmaking duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside), the film will act as a series prequel focusing on the origins of the iconic chainsaw-wielding maniac.

While not a huge fan of the franchise personally, I appreciate the impact that the original film and series as a whole has had on the genre. From the trailer, it’s a safe bet that Leatherface will be dripping with blood and guts, though the style does remind me a bit of the films produced during the Platinum Dunes remake boom of the ’00s. Take a look at the film’s official synopsis and trailer below!

In Texas, years before the events of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriffs’ daughter dead. Ten years later, he kidnaps a young nurse and escapes with 3 other inmates. Pursued by authorities including the deranged sheriff out to avenge his daughter’s death, the young Sawyer teen goes on a violent road trip from hell, molding him into the monster known now as Leatherface.

Leatherface will be released as a DirecTV exclusive on September 21, 2017, with a limited theatrical run and full VOD release on October 20.
